British expat wins annual UAE Twitter boast-off

According to his Twitter profile, @reluctantnomad is a ‘Man. Traveller. Thinker.’

ABU DHABI: A British expat has scooped top prize in the UAE’s first Twitter Boast-Off, which saw thousands of residents attempt to trumpet their own achievements in 140 characters or less.

Richmond Bilford-Wicks, who tweets under the name @ReluctantNomad, secured the prize with a tweet that read “Bangkok tomorrow for business trip, then fly to Hawaii for holiday, then London to see the folks. Not boasting! #jetlag #travel”.

He fought off stiff competition from Dubai-based Australian tweeter @DXBAngel, whose tweet of “Yacht cruise, champers with the girls, free dinner at the Burj! #mustntgrumble” was praised by judges for its “immaculate self-satisfaction”.

“These are, without doubt, 140 of the most self-regarding characters we’ve witnessed,” said Boast-Off judge Hazem Spartacus. “The reference to his jetset lifestyle, the hashtags to suggest that total strangers might find this information useful, and of course, the elegant get-out clause against accusations of bragging – it’s just phenomenal.”

Bilford-Wicks wins a gold-plated BlackBerry and an internship at the region’s top social media branding agency, Tw@.
