DUBAI: Sources confirmed Friday that a dinner party among a group of close friends and acquaintances had been labeled “a complete disaster” after an argument erupted over which Dubai café served the best carrot cake in town.

According to attendees of the meal, which had been arranged by Alex and Yasmeen Redding in their three-bedroom villa, chaos didn’t descend upon the event until late in the evening, following some otherwise enjoyable conversation.

“At first, it was fantastic,” said Vicky Long, 29. “Yasmeen’s vegetarian lasagna was a success and we’d had some very pleasant discussion about the current situations in Egypt and Syria, plus the recent Dubai road rage incident, without so much as a voice being raised or outwardly controversial opinion touched upon.”

But joy turned to despair as dessert was being served, after a casual remark by Jenny Dewers, 28, in which she suggested that the carrot cake served at The Lime Tree café, a popular Dubai choice, was no longer her favourite in the city.

“Yasmeen asked her to repeat herself, which she did, but louder,” said Rana Clump, 32. “The mood immediately switched… you could cut it with a knife. Then Yasmeen said that she was wrong, just wrong and started slamming her fists repeatedly on the table.”

About 10 minutes after making the outburst, the hosts reportedly said it was time Dewers considered leaving, but not before the other six members of the dinner party had angrily entered the fray, with definite lines having been drawn up between those who thought the Lime Tree’s carrot cake was the best and those who didn’t.

“It reached a climax when Jenny said she thought the Lime Tree had been slipping for a couple of years… I honestly thought Alex was going to hit her,” said Long. “It’s just a good job she didn’t bring up her recently drawn up list of her favourite brunch spots. It’s a rather provocative piece.”

#1. Magnolia Bakery BLOWS. the only, ONLY good thing about it is the Banana Pudding. The cupcakes suck as does most of the other stuff. As a New Yorker who was transplanted in the UAE, this is the truth.
