CAIRO: It may have come under fire for allegations of torture and brutally, but even Egypt’s secret police has proved that it has a sense of humour when it comes to social media.
The Cairo-based Egyptian Homeland Security, reformed from the notorious State Security Investigations Service, launched its first Twitter account yesterday with a message that saw hearty laughs across the country.
“Hello Egyptians! You may not be able to ‘Sisi’ us, but we can certainly ‘Sisi’ you,” the organisation – under the handle @EgyptHomelandSec – posted, a comment that was soon retweeted thousands of times by intrigued users of the social media platform. And the ploy seemed to work, with the account racking up an impressive 67,000 followers in just two hours.
“It really goes to show the power of Twitter.. that years of corruption, brutality and injustice can be forgiven with 140 amusing characters. Or less,” said social media guru Finnegan Chump.
