Former Expat Who Left Dubai Seven Years Ago Can’t Stop Making Endless Comments About Dubai

Ex resident still continually criticising city on social media years after having left

Despite having left the Middle East over seven years ago, former Dubai resident Jade O’Brian hasn’t stopped passing comment on the region on social media, according to friends.

The UK-based freelance writer lasted just 18 months in Dubai before she left in 2007 claiming that it “wasn’t for her”, yet continues to make endless disparaging remarks about the city on the Facebook walls of friends who still live there.

“Glad I got out when I did!” was a recent comment left below a status update of a former colleague regarding bad traffic, posted just minutes after she remarked that it was “such a shame those who actually built it don’t live in such luxury” under a photo of a friend’s new Dubai apartment.

“It’s really weird,” said Helga Precinct, who shared a flat with O’Brian for three months. “I haven’t spoken to Jade for about five years, yet every time I put up a message or picture about the UAE, she’s the first to make a comment, usually saying how culturally hollow or morally bankrupt it is here and what an amazing time she’s had since she left.”

Dubai has featured heavily in O’Brian’s budding journalism career of late too, having been included in articles such as ‘10 Reasons Why Dubai Is The Most Overrated Place On Earth’ and ‘10 Ways Dubai Is Killing The Planet’ for CNN Traveller and a piece entitled ‘Sinking Sands: Why The Dubai Dream Won’t Last’ for The Daily Mail.

Although O’Brian has claimed that she “wouldn’t go back to that soulless hellhole if you paid me a million pounds” on numerous occasions, the 34-year-old has reportedly applied for 72 different jobs in Dubai over the past seven years without success.

Look, If you cannot see the jounalistic integrity of what i write, then on your own head be it. Whilst you are correct to state that i have applied for jobs back in Dubai, it is merely to get back ‘under the skin’ of the Country for an undercover expose of all that is shallow and hateful.
Also, i feel a little undervalued now that Asian men do not ogle my ample frmae on the beach anymore. it made me feel special

Given that the article and Jade are as real as Santa, why do you drag Asian men into this? We are past riding British village bikes.

        Derka,
Have you been to Jumeirah beach Park lately?
When i used to frequest there (and as i see on all my former friends and colleagues social media feeds, sub-continental ogling is alive and well on the sandy shores of the land of castles in the sky

You’re a real ‘go-getter’ huh? You’ve stated your opinions numerous times, yet you still feel the need to let people know how much you hate it… And what’s this about an exposé on the hateful and shallow Dubai? As though this hasn’t been attempted before? As a freelance journalist, how do you expect to gain any traction with the story after it has been attempted many times by various international News outlets?
I think you will find all you can say about it and more here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7985361.stm

Also Vice, an independent news source, took an extensive look at the conditions in which the workers lived:

I actually sympathise with you, I agree with your view of Dubai, however nothing is going to change – you can try but it’s not going to work. So there’s really no need to bash Dubai. It’s simply flogging a dead horse at this point.

Jerka, so you are over ‘riding british village bikes’. This actually translates as you were one of the oglers on the beach, tried it on with a British lady and got a slap (and possibly a police record) Get real (and stop swimming in your y fronts, swimming shorts are cheap!)

Bloody hell ! I was born here, Dubai ain’t no hellhole, tho they take shitass amount of money. You need to get over it, lady. I mean, yes, Dubai is more luxury and that people who build them don’t live there. So what? I don’t get why you gotta diss Dubai like that. Don’t have anything to talk about or something? Damn.
