Fourteen-horse pile-up at Dubai World Cup as lights turned off for Earth Hour

Clash of timings results in accident on homestretch

DUBAI: Racing officials at the Dubai World Cup were forced to apologise last night after a decision to turn the stadium lights off in honour of Earth Hour resulted in a 14-horse pile-up on the homestretch. Although none of the horses or riders were injured, one spokesman admitted that were the dates of Earth Hour and the World Cup to clash again in future, they would consider instigating an hour-long break in the schedule or “at least not just turning all the lights off mid-way through a race”.

    this is just an absolute disgrace to turn off the lights at the DWC. I was in the hospitality lounge and I couldn’t see the bottles in the fridge. I ended up with a bottle of cheap prosecco not my usual vintage Bollinger.

    This was all fixed. I had placed a bet on Blue Lagoon who was in the lead, as the lights went of he lost his pace and turned up on 4th position! I lost 500,000$ dollars!!! This is not cool!! Who is going to repay me the money.. I am bankrupt now and begging on Dubai streets!
