Fourth anniversary of Egyptian revolution celebrated with series of historical reenactments

History buffs and hobbyists mark anniversary in enthusiastic style

Thousands of history buffs and hobbyists across Egypt came together over the weekend to mark the fourth anniversary of the 2011 revolution with a series of historical reenactments.

Crowds in Cairo and Alexandria amassed to expertly recreate angry scenes from the uprising’s pro-democracy protests, with scholars praising the attention to detail and level of enthusiasm.

“It was really great that the police and security forces got involved as well, there was a real sense of community spirit in the air,” said professor Francesca Wallop from the American University in Cairo.

Now into their fourth year, the staging of historical reenactments is expected to become an annual tradition in Egypt to celebrate the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak and the country’s successful move towards democracy.
