The Inbetweeners set for flop in Saudi

The Saudi versions of Will, Neil, Jay and Simon (above) aren’t any near as funny as the originals, claim critics

RIYADH: Given teen comedy series The Inbetweeners’ huge ratings success in the UK, it was only a matter of time before a remake hit screens in Saudi Arabia.

Unfortunately, early reviews of the show, which premiered last night, have claimed that the new version isn’t a patch on the original.

“The guys just aren’t anywhere near as funny as their British counterparts,” claimed MTV KSA, which also suggested the series’ new setting in an ultra-conservative single-sex school in Riyadh might have played a part in stifling the humour.

Meanwhile, TV Quick criticised the lack of swearing. “Not once in the whole episode does the Saudi character supposed to be Jay shout c*****, m*****, spl***, gh**-gh**, xy******** or t**** ph****,” it moaned.
