Qatar to buy Amnesty International

Gulf state responds after human rights group publishes damning report into construction sector

DOHA: Qatar has reportedly purchased the human rights organisation Amnesty International, less than a day after it published a damning report into the country’s construction sector as work begins on stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.

While financial details of the deal have not been revealed, experts have suggested that move is an economically shrewd one by the gas-rich Gulf state.

“It would have cost Qatar an absolute fortune to meet the various demands laid out in Amnesty’s recent report,” said Hamish McDervitt of the Gulf Analyst Group. “Buying the organisation outright is a simple, one-stop solution that swiftly and effectively deals with all of these problems.”

Rumours have circulated that once the deal is complete, Qatar plans to move Amnesty International’s headquarters to Knightsbridge in London and transform it into a “luxury mall and residential complex”.

How can Qatar can buy human rights organization? Usually human rights organist is non-profit organization which runs with the help of volunteers and funding from public.

This is outrageous and wrong! NGO’s should behave according to certain ethical guidelines. This only should have been done by competitive bid!

Easy with the too much cheerful comments – what seems to be a done deal might yet be blocked by the EU Commission, as it could give Qatar a monopoly on human rights. Also, according to better-informed insiders, the Vatican Bank as one of the main underwriters of the syndication is still demanding more favorable terms, like preferred stock and call options on the luxury mall complex.

The truth is that if they could buy Amnesty International to shut them up, they would! Thankfully AI are not for sale. I’m sure they are using other pressure tactics to shut them up however.l
