Saudi Arabia’s business and political elite were among the special guests invited to help celebrate the reopening of the Ritz-Carlton Riyadh on Sunday afternoon, just weeks after a large majority of them had been detained at the luxury hotel as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s anti-corruption crackdown.
“It’s really nice to be back, only this time actually being allowed to leave of my own free will,” said one senior oil industry billionaire, who was held at the Ritz between November and mid January. “And great to see that they’ve finally restocked the bathrooms.”
“I’m just glad the drinks are free,” commented another. “Because I was completely wiped out last time I was here!”
