The organisers of the 2014 Arab League Summit announced late last night that the second day of the two-day event in Kuwait had been cancelled following the split of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.
In an emergency session held after the news broke, a unanimous decision was made to close the summit early.
“It feels like the sensible thing to do,” said Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah in a statement. “We’re all shocked and saddened by the breakup of this much-loved A-list couple and it would simply be wrong to continue the summit with such a dark cloud hanging over our heads.”
According to reports, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Egypt’s interim president Adly Mansour immediately boarded planes to fly home on hearing the news without attending the emergency session.
“I think they just wanted to be with their families,” said a source.
