Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly eyeing up a well-paid, short-lived move to the UAE when his contract ends this summer.
The former England captain, who announced earlier today that he would be leaving the club he first joined aged nine, is said to be a target for several UAE football clubs, who are hoping to make a noisy media spectacle in bringing the 34-year-old to the Middle East before quietly letting him go when he gets bored around November after a few disappointing months.
“It’s a hugely exciting prospect for the UAE league,” said Dubai-based sports analyst Dieter Jurrp.
“Gerrard is one of the greatest footballers of his generation, so it would be fantastic to have him playing here for three months or so before he gets fed up and heads back home for a management position or to the USA where at least there’s something to do between games.”
Although nothing has yet been confirmed, the news is already creating a buzz among football fans across the UAE.
“I’m not a Liverpool supporter, but would still love to see Gerrard in action,” said Al-Ahli fan Mohammed Al-Farooq. “Trouble is, I’ve got a holiday booked for the end of September, so he might have already left by the time I get back.”
