Syria criticised for not separating chemical weapons materials into different recycling and garbage bags

Syria could face on-the-spot fine should it fail to follow rules again

DAMASCUS: The UN and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons have slammed Syria for the country’s failing to adhere to strict rules regarding the removal of its chemical weapons materials.

“When the Assad government signed the historic agreement with us regarding moving their stock of chemical weapons materials out of Syria, it was clearly informed – just like everyone else – that the removal team would arrive on Wednesday mornings and that they would have to separate these materials into different coloured bags for recycling and garbage before putting them out on the pavement,” said the OPCW in a statement.

“When we came to make the first collection yesterday, we were extremely disappointed to find that it had all been all dumped together in one bin bag.”

Syria will reportedly be given a warning and could face an on-the-spot fine of up to $50 if it fails to follow the rules again.
