The Bangles disqualified from Egyptian election

The Bangles, yesterday

CAIRO: Egypt’s troubled transition to possible democracy has been thrown into further turmoil after it was revealed that The Bangles were among the list of candidates disqualified by the electoral commission.

The all-girl group, who had been riding a wave of popularity across the country after their song Walk Like An Egyptian became the unofficial anthem of last year’s revolution, join a growing list that includes former intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Khairat al-Shater and the Salafist candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail.

“We’re not giving up,” said singer and guitarist Susanna Hoffs. “Each one of our supporters is ready to Walk Like An Egyptian again to display the Eternal Flame that burns in their heart in the quest for democracy.”

The Bangles are believed to have been disqualified because they failed to get enough signatures to endorse their candidacy and also because none of them are Egyptian.
