Upcoming video game criticised for giving wrong impression of city

A shot from Grand Theft Auto: City of Life

DUBAI: Residents have criticised an upcoming video game that they claim does not paint Dubai in a fair light and could well damage its international reputation.

In Grand Theft Auto V: City of Life Edition, due for release later this month, gamers are encouraged to drive at reckless speeds on the stunningly rendered streets of Dubai.

“It’s absolutely disgusting,” Mindy Breadbasket, an outraged mother of three, told reporters. “In the game, there is a very limited selection of four-wheel drive cars to choose from, whereas in the real Dubai we have pretty much everything, right up to the latest Range Rover Evoke or Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.”

The name should be changed to “Hot Rod Habibis in the City of Doom”.

I have to say that I was disappointed when I tried the game. It just wasn’t life-like enough – you just can’t get close enough to the car in front like you can in real life on Shk Zayed. And the hand gestures from other drivers are not realistic. There is no facility to have a child standing in the front seat without a seatbelt. Come on get real.

I played the beta version, and the artificial intelligence is far too rational. Beat up old Camrys and Tiidas almost never pull out into the fast lane for no discernable reason at 40 km/h, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times a bus moved into my lane without indicating and with total disregard for other traffic, forcing me to choose between (a) slamming on the brakes and being rear-ended, or (b) swerving into the central reservation.

The game is appalling. Where is the excitement, the need for constant vigilance to avoid being sideswiped by an exhausted taxi driver falling asleep at the wheel after an 18-hour shift? There isn’t even a function to flash your lights angrily at the driver in front when you’re tailgating him at 180 km/h and there’s no gap for him to move over.

Hopefully they’ve addressed these issues in the final version.

I’m with SammyG on the lack of realism….i mean, who uses a a 5 year old nokia to sms whilst driving anymore? and what’s with the sensible tinting options on the windows? i’d much rather have every window completely blacked out so that i have no idea where im going!

First of all there no such thing as GTA V City Of Life edition, the city of life is a mod in GTA vice city “Like the other 20million mods made” which any player or individual could make. Second of all Grand Theft Auto is banned in this region for it’s content which has a lot of violence and harsh language and rated and 18+ yet kids could easily walk out of a game shop with it. Get your fact and references straight buddy.

Banned in Saudi for sure, but we aren’t so sure about the rest of the GCC. UAE is still considering a ban.

Surely it should be Grand ‘Jingly’ Auto V. Then all the Indian drivers could race their Nissan pick ups (with 8 people in of course)complete with bald tyres, dodgy parts and no brake lights or indicators round Dubai whilst picking their noses.

  12. do you people STILL not realize what satire is?

I also found the game an unrealistic depiction of Dubai. I did not once see a goat in the passenger’s seat, labourers crossing motorways on foot or cars with Saudi plates straddling two lanes at once. I hope the developers fix these problems.

I definitely think it should be aloud. Just because it happens in a game it doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean people will be influenced to follow the in-game actions

Well, it would be rubbish if it was on mute, would ruin the game for me. So I agree with Bruce, it should be aloud.

The game does not take into account the new proposed laws which require new cars to be without indicator assemblies, rear view mirrors, seat belts and brake lights. It has been estimated this could save up to 1.5 million liters of fuel each year!
I don’t see a rain option in the settings either so we can drive around ‘drifting’ which is so amusing!
Must get back to the interesting life I lead. Off to play dominos!

Its disgraceful such an unfinished product can hit the shelves even if it is a Beta. The swearing should be in a variety languages for starters and I also found that it does not allow you to park anywhere you like at prayer time.

Nice one Chrystal……Am disappointed although not surprised that the game makers obviously didn’t visit Dubai. Probably still wandering around Saudi looking for us. Think we’ve covered most of the stuff that is sadly missing from the game except rumble strips around all corners, speed bumps everyphickingwhere, the Indian Business Lane (One in from the outside with a speed limit of 90kph), the Fast Lane (six in from the outside where the real drivers flash past you), shredded HGV tyres strewn randomly but generally where you’re about to floor it and of course local gentlemen who think that an enormous V8 pickup makes up for lack of size elsewhere.

And everyone missed the most important error. When did a car last get stolen in Dubai – The World’s Safest City. Like Never. I leave my Yaris outside my Villa every night with the windows open & keys in the ignition but no one has ever stolen it. Bogus

Fantastic game, got quite addicted but few things missing, I had to stop behind a toyota pickup at a red light a few times and not once did the driver open the door hawk up a gig greeney and spit on the road, they need to add this if they really want to make it realistic. Also where was the variety of small women in huge SUV’s who cant see over the steering wheel on the phone, looking through their handbag and shouting at the kids who are swinging from the sunroof and dangling each other out of the windows while she is reversing out of her drive straight into oncomming traffic without looking? It is the detail that really makes the difference between a good game and a really great one!
