AMMAN: Hip young Jordanians are flocking to social media in record numbers to boast about their fleeting encounters with US comic Jon Stewart, who is currently in the capital Amman working on a film project.
“In those three seconds, I felt we totally bonded,” declared Hanna Barbera, a 21-year-old Jordanian student as she checked her iPhone for the shot of her standing alongside her hero.
“I told him I was a huge fan and when I asked for a picture he said ‘Sure’! It was like we’d known each other a lifetime!” she purred, recalling her encounter in a Starbucks carpark. “Talk about chemistry.”
And Hanna isn’t alone, and for the three consecutive weeks ‘Wow! I’ve just met Jon Stewart’ has been the country’s top social media trend as thousands of youngsters compete to upload the most awkwardly posed pictures with the Daily Show star.
“Yeah, we totally hung out,” says Wael Shady, an unemployed musician who posted his effort from the toilets of the Marriott to Instagram. “We shared a hand-dryer. It was awesome.”
The star has been the subject of several popular Twitter trends in Jordan since his arrival, including the controversial #jonstewartforking that led to the arrest of four teenagers in the northern town of Irbid.
