Conservative Israeli newspaper airbrushes women from Women’s World Cup match

22 players plus the referee were removed from the image

The 2015 Women’s World Cup kicked off on Saturday night, with hosts Canada narrowly securing a victory over China thanks to a late penalty from Christine Sinclair.

However, Israel’s ultra-conservative Jewish newspaper The Announcer reported on the game with a curious front page photo in which it had airbrushed out all female players as well as the referee so as not to offend its highly devout Orthodox readers.

Readers also noted another picture inside where the only person not to have been removed was a naked male streaker.

Sources at the paper said the women had been airbrushed out for “reasons of modesty”.
